León station is by the Bernesga river, a short walk from the centre, with high-speed trains to Madrid via Palencia and Valladolid and to Asturias through the Pajares base tunnel. It is the whole province's link to fast trains, so many travellers come in from El Bierzo or the mountains.

The city of León and San Andrés del Rabanedo, right next to it on the west, work as a single city in practice. Together they hold the province's main hospital, the high-speed station, the university and the cathedral, and they are where half the province comes for appointments and paperwork.

When demand peaks

• Holy Week in León (Easter week): León's Holy Week, of international tourist interest, fills the old town with processions day and night and closes many central streets. It is best to set the pickup outside the procession routes and book holiday departures early.
• The French Way in León (spring to autumn, especially summer): The French Way crosses the province through Sahagún, León, Astorga and Ponferrada, and in season many pilgrims need to reach the start of a stage, skip a section or get home from the station.

Tip: In winter the Pajares and Manzanal passes and the mountain roads can have snow or ice: for an early flight or train, bring the pickup forward and check road conditions.
