Leaving from El Bierzo

El Bierzo is a basin ringed by mountains in the west of the province, with Ponferrada as its capital and Bembibre in the Upper Bierzo. It has its own hospital, vineyards with their own designation of origin and Las Médulas, and for many trips it looks to Galicia before León.

Which way it goes

To the north, the AP-66 crosses the mountains through the Huerna tunnel into Asturias, with the toll-free N-630 over Pajares as the alternative; to the south, the A-66 runs down to Zamora via Benavente; to the east, the A-231 follows the Camino to Burgos; and from El Bierzo, the A-6 leads into Galicia. Valladolid is reached on the N-601.

Gijón, seen from León

Gijón is reached by following the AP-66 into Asturias and carrying on towards the coast. It is a beach trip in summer and a port and work trip the rest of the year.
