Which way it goes

To the north, the AP-66 crosses the mountains through the Huerna tunnel into Asturias, with the toll-free N-630 over Pajares as the alternative; to the south, the A-66 runs down to Zamora via Benavente; to the east, the A-231 follows the Camino to Burgos; and from El Bierzo, the A-6 leads into Galicia. Valladolid is reached on the N-601.

Palencia is on the León–Madrid railway line; by road the route crosses the Tierra de Campos to the south-east. A car is booked when a specific address or a time the train does not cover is involved.

The city of Palencia, on the Carrión river, holds the hospital, the high-speed station, provincial government offices and most services. People come in daily from across the province for appointments and errands, and many connections with trains and with Valladolid start here.

Tip: In winter the Pajares and Manzanal passes and the mountain roads can have snow or ice: for an early flight or train, bring the pickup forward and check road conditions.
