Ponferrada and El Bierzo

El Bierzo is a basin ringed by mountains in the west of the province, with Ponferrada as its capital and Bembibre in the Upper Bierzo. It has its own hospital, vineyards with their own designation of origin and Las Médulas, and for many trips it looks to Galicia before León.

From Ponferrada to Madrid and Barajas

From Ponferrada and Bembibre the route to Madrid is the A-6, climbing the Manzanal pass towards Astorga and continuing via Benavente and Tordesillas to the Guadarrama. It is a long trip in which the Manzanal and the mountains near Madrid are the tricky stretches in winter; for Barajas the route joins the M-40 or M-50 on reaching Madrid.

Around the province of León

Internal trips in León province are long and often through the mountains: from Villablino to the capital, or from El Bierzo to León, means crossing passes. The most requested trips are from the towns to the León or El Bierzo hospitals, to León station and to Camino de Santiago stages, where public transport does not reach or runs only a few times a day.

Busiest times of year

• Holy Week in León (Easter week): León's Holy Week, of international tourist interest, fills the old town with processions day and night and closes many central streets. It is best to set the pickup outside the procession routes and book holiday departures early.
• San Juan and San Pedro fiestas (late June): León's main fiestas bring a week of concerts and events in late June, with a lot of night-time movement between the city and the surrounding towns after the buses have stopped.
• San Froilán (early October): The San Froilán fiestas, honouring the diocese's patron saint, close León's festive calendar in early October, with traditional parades and many people from across the province in the city.
• The French Way in León (spring to autumn, especially summer): The French Way crosses the province through Sahagún, León, Astorga and Ponferrada, and in season many pilgrims need to reach the start of a stage, skip a section or get home from the station.
• Ponferrada Templar Night (July): The Templar Night fills Ponferrada's old town and the castle area with a parade and events that end late; the centre is closed to traffic and returns to the Bierzo villages bunch up in the early hours.

Tip: If you are leaving from El Bierzo, compare flights from Santiago or Asturias before booking to Barajas: depending on the destination, the airport run can be much shorter.
