Leaving from Astorga y La Maragatería

Astorga, with its cathedral, Roman walls and Gaudí's episcopal palace, is the gateway to La Maragatería and a key stop on the Camino de Santiago. It sits where the A-6, AP-71 and N-120 meet, halfway between León and El Bierzo.

Which way it goes

Astorga sits on the A-6, so the way to Madrid runs straight south-east through Benavente and Tordesillas, with the Guadarrama at the end. For Barajas the route leaves the A-6 for the M-40 or M-50 at the entrance to Madrid.

From León province people fly from Barajas, from Asturias or, in El Bierzo, from Galicia; León airport has few routes. For early flights, a car from home avoids spending the night before away.

Tip: For Las Médulas, allow plenty of time for the return: walks around the site tend to take longer than planned and there is no alternative transport if the pickup is missed.
