León, Asturias or Barajas airport: which airport to choose for your flight from León, Astorga, Laciana and El Bierzo, and how far each one is by car
From León province people fly from three places. León airport, at La Virgen del Camino, is 10 km from the capital, but it has few routes and some only in season, so the first thing is to check that the flight exists. Asturias airport, near Avilés, has many more destinations and is reached on the AP-66 and the Huerna tunnel: 174 km and about 134 min from León, if the passes are clear. Barajas has everything and is 354 km away along the A-66 and the A-6, from 427,38 € with a fixed price. From El Bierzo the sums change: Ponferrada is 228 km from Asturias and 406 km from Barajas, and it is worth looking at flights from Galicia too.

What flights does León airport have, and who is it for?
León airport is at La Virgen del Camino, in the municipality of Valverde de la Virgen, beside the N-120 west of the city and sharing its runway with the air base. It is the closest airport for the whole province and the most convenient when it has the flight you need: from León it is 10 km, from San Andrés del Rabanedo the transfer starts from 23,34 €, and from Astorga it is about 38 min along the AP-71 or the N-120. The problem is the offer: it has few scheduled routes, several only in the summer season, and Aena publishes them on the airport's page; before assuming you can fly from León, check that the destination and date exist.
For anyone who has that flight, León airport is the cheapest option in time and in transfer, and it is reached without crossing any pass, which in winter is an advantage neither Asturias nor Barajas has. From Laciana or El Bierzo it is still a long trip: from Villablino it is 97 km along mountain roads and from Ponferrada 107 km over the Manzanal, so for those districts it only pays off against Barajas, not against the Asturias or Galicia airports. The terminal is small, the car park is in front and the pickup with a name sign takes place in the single arrivals hall.
When does Asturias airport pay off from León and the mountains?
Asturias airport is in Castrillón, near Avilés, and has many more routes than León's, with domestic destinations all year and European ones above all in summer. From León you reach it on the AP-66, which crosses the Cantabrian range through the Huerna toll tunnel and continues to Oviedo and the A-8 towards Avilés; the toll-free alternative is the N-630 over the Pajares pass, slower and the first to get difficult with snow. It is 174 km and about 134 min from León, with the transfer from 223,31 €; from Astorga, 203 km.
It pays off when the destination is on its list and not on León's, and when the road saving over Barajas is large: for the capital, its surroundings and La Robla, Asturias is less than half as far as Madrid. It has two drawbacks. The first is winter, because the Huerna and Pajares are the passes that close most often in the province, and an early flight in January means checking the road conditions the day before and leaving with a margin. The second is the return in the small hours, with no train or bus from the airport to León, which is exactly the case in which the driver waiting in arrivals with the flight number saves a night in Asturias.
When do you have to go to Barajas, and how do you get there from each district?
Barajas is the airport you end up going to when the flight is long-haul, when you have to connect with an international flight or when the date does not fit the León and Asturias routes. From León the way is the A-66 to Benavente and the A-6 to the Guadarrama, crossed through the AP-6 tunnels or over the Alto del León, and the M-40 or the M-50 to the terminals without entering Madrid: 354 km and about 244 min in daytime with no incidents. The other way to get there is the AVE to Chamartín and the Cercanías to T4, which works by day and with hand luggage, but not for a flight leaving at dawn.
From the south of the province Barajas is closer to hand than it seems: Astorga and La Bañeza are already on the A-6 and do not go through León, and from Valencia de Don Juan you go down to Benavente. From El Bierzo the trip is the longest in the province, with the Manzanal at the start and the Guadarrama at the end: Bembibre is 387 km away and Villafranca del Bierzo 427 km. Barajas's advantage is that there is a flight for everything at every hour; the cost is the road time, which the transfer with a driver turns into a door-to-door trip with the price fixed before leaving and a pickup with a name sign on the way back.
Which airport makes sense from El Bierzo and Laciana?
El Bierzo is the district that has to think hardest. It looks to Galicia along the A-6, and for many destinations the Santiago or A Coruña airports are closer than Barajas, even though the platform does not yet publish those routes from the province; to the north, Asturias is reached from Ponferrada on the A-6 to León and the AP-66, or along the mountain roads of the Upper Bierzo, and it is 228 km. The province page gives the advice: if you are leaving from El Bierzo, compare flights from Santiago or Asturias before booking to Barajas, because depending on the destination the airport run can be much shorter. León airport, 107 km away, is worth it when it has the flight.
Laciana starts further away in any case. From Villablino you have to go down mountain-pass roads to Ponferrada or León before joining a motorway, and in winter that first part decides the trip: snow on the valley passes can make it much longer and argues for bringing the pickup forward. León airport is 97 km away and is the shortest when it has a flight; Asturias is reached via León and the AP-66; Barajas, 445 km away, is a day's travel. For an early flight from Laciana, the car that collects you at home before dawn avoids sleeping away the night before, which is the real alternative.
How is the pickup time worked out, and what changes in winter?
The sum is the same for all three airports: from the flight time you subtract the margin the airline asks for at the airport, larger for flights outside Schengen and with checked luggage, the road time of the chosen route and a buffer for the stretch that may get complicated, the Huerna towards Asturias or the approach into Madrid towards Barajas. The result is the pickup time, and the driver proposes it when confirming the booking, which carries the terminal, the flight number and your home address. The price is per car and trip, includes luggage and child seats, and does not change with the hour or the traffic; on the return, the driver waits in arrivals with a name sign and follows the flight if it is delayed.
In winter the choice of airport is also a choice of pass. Towards Asturias there are the Huerna and Pajares; towards Madrid, the Guadarrama and, from El Bierzo, the Manzanal; towards León, from Laciana, the valley passes. The Directorate-General for Traffic publishes the state of all of them and the province page advises, for an early flight, bringing the pickup forward and checking the road the day before. León airport is the only one reached without crossing any of them from the capital and the plateau, which is why in January it is worth checking first whether it has the flight. If a road is closed, the driver lets you know through the app and proposes the alternative rather than missing the pickup.
Frequently asked questions
Which flights leave from León airport?
Few scheduled routes and some only in season; the current list is published by Aena on the airport's page. Check the destination and date before booking the transfer: from León it is 10 km.
How much is it from León to Asturias airport?
The published "from" fare is 223,31 € for 174 km and about 134 min along the AP-66 and the Huerna tunnel. The calculator gives the exact price with your address, date and time.
From Ponferrada, is Barajas or Asturias the better choice?
It depends on the destination. Asturias is 228 km away and Barajas 406 km; for many destinations, besides, the Galician airports are closer than Madrid. Compare the flights before booking.
Will you collect me at the airport if the flight is late?
Yes. The booking carries the flight number and the driver follows the actual arrival: the pickup moves with the delay and the driver waits in arrivals with a name sign. Waiting conditions are on the help page and on the airport pickup page.
What if the Huerna or Pajares are closed by snow?
The driver checks the road conditions the day before and proposes bringing the pickup forward or changing pass; if there is no way through, you are told through the app. The fixed price does not change for snow. In January it is worth checking first whether León airport has the flight.

Each airport's routes and seasons belong to Aena and the airlines and change every season; check them before booking.
