León Hospital and El Bierzo Hospital: getting to an appointment from Astorga, La Bañeza, Sahagún, Valencia de Don Juan, Laciana and the Bierzo villages with a car that waits and brings you back
León province has two reference hospitals: the León University Healthcare Complex, at Altos de Nava north of the capital, which serves the plateau, the central mountains and the southern districts, and El Bierzo Hospital, at Fuentesnuevas in Ponferrada, which serves El Bierzo and part of Laciana. From the villages an appointment usually takes the whole morning, because the bus runs a few times a day and does not stop at the door: from Astorga it is 54 km and about 45 min, from La Bañeza 55 km, from Sahagún 63 km and from Villablino to El Bierzo Hospital 64 km. A car with a driver that collects you at home, waits during the appointment and brings you back costs from 78,78 € from Astorga, with the price fixed before booking. It is not medical transport.

Which hospital serves each district, and where is each one?
The León University Healthcare Complex, run by Sacyl, is the province's reference hospital and stands at Altos de Nava, in the north of the city, with the main entrance and the outpatient clinics in different buildings and a car park that fills up first thing. It serves the capital and its surroundings, La Robla and the central mountains, Sahagún, Valencia de Don Juan and the Esla valley, Astorga and La Maragatería and the Tierra de La Bañeza, as well as referrals from the whole province for the specialities found only in León. El Bierzo Hospital, also run by Sacyl, is at Fuentesnuevas, a district of Ponferrada on the road towards Villafranca, and serves Ponferrada, Bembibre, Villafranca del Bierzo and the surrounding valleys.
Laciana sits in between: Villablino goes down to Ponferrada for many specialities and to León for others, and in both cases along mountain roads. And El Bierzo, for what its hospital does not cover, is referred to León, which means crossing the Manzanal there and back on the same day: from Ponferrada it is 115 km and about 88 min. The province page sums it up: for those coming down from Laciana or other valleys, an appointment usually takes the whole day. It is worth knowing which building and which floor the appointment is in, because the León complex is large and the time between the door and the clinic counts.
How do you get there today from Astorga, La Bañeza, Sahagún and Valencia de Don Juan?
From Astorga the way to León hospital is the AP-71 toll road or the N-120, then the LE-30 ring road to the Altos de Nava exit without entering the centre: 54 km and about 45 min. From La Bañeza you go up the A-6 to Astorga or along the Santa María del Páramo road, 55 km in all. The intercity bus arrives at León bus station, next to the railway station, and from there you take the city bus to the hospital or a taxi, with the appointment time in your head and the departures from the village, which are few and on weekdays only, in your hand.
Sahagún and Valencia de Don Juan have the same problem from the other side of the province. From Sahagún you come along the A-231, the Camino motorway, and skirt León on the LE-30: 63 km. From Valencia de Don Juan you go up the Villamañán road or the N-630, about 41 min. Sahagún has regional trains to León, but the station is far from the hospital and the timetables are not designed for a nine o'clock appointment. For an older person travelling alone, or for a couple in which one of the two cannot drive after a test, the car that collects you at home and waits solves the whole day.
And from Laciana and the Bierzo villages?
Villablino is the hardest case in the province. To El Bierzo Hospital it is 64 km down the Sil valley along the Palacios and Toreno road, and to León hospital 96 km over the central mountain passes; in winter snow on either road can make the first part of the trip much longer. There is a bus, but it leaves a few times a day and does not fit an early appointment, so many Laciana families organise the appointment around who can drive that day. The car with a driver replaces that calculation: it collects you at home at the resulting time, waits as long as the appointment lasts and brings you back.
From the Bierzo villages El Bierzo Hospital is close but not always to hand: from Bembibre it is 25 km along the A-6, and from Villafranca del Bierzo about 17 min along the same motorway, with the hospital at the entrance to Ponferrada on that side. What changes the day is the referral to León for the specialities El Bierzo does not have: from Astorga to El Bierzo, the other way round, it is 67 km over the Manzanal. For those long trips it is worth booking the transfer with the appointment time and the expected discharge time, and saying if an accessible vehicle is needed, which is assigned at booking.
How does the transfer with waiting time work for an appointment?
You book on the website or in the app with your home address, the hospital and the building or clinic entrance, the appointment time and an estimate of how long it will take; the price is fixed before confirming and includes the waiting time you have given and the trip home. The driver collects you with a margin for the journey and for parking or dropping you at the door, walks you to the entrance if needed and waits in the car park or near the hospital; when the appointment ends, the patient calls or uses the app and the car comes back to the door. If the appointment runs over, the driver waits and the adjustment follows the policy published on the help page, not memory or guesswork.
For anyone who goes every week or every month, to rehabilitation, dialysis or a scheduled treatment, a recurring service can be set up with the same driver and the same times, and a single invoice a month; the fixed service page explains it. A relative can book for the patient from their own phone, giving the name and telephone of the person travelling, and receives the pickup and arrival notices. The figures are the route engine's and the customer sees them before booking: from Valencia de Don Juan to León hospital, for example, 42 km; from Sahagún, 47 min; from La Robla, 25 km.
What is this service not: medical transport, invoices and companions?
A car with a driver is not medical transport. It carries no stretcher and no healthcare staff, and it does not replace the ambulance Sacyl assigns when the doctor prescribes non-urgent medical transport; that entitlement is requested at the hospital itself or at the health centre and costs the patient nothing. The transfer with a driver is for anyone who can travel seated in an ordinary car, alone or accompanied, and wants to get to and from the appointment without depending on the bus or a relative who drives; if a wheelchair is needed, you say so when booking and an accessible vehicle is assigned, under the conditions on the accessibility page.
The price is per car and trip, so a companion costs nothing extra, and the invoice is issued in the name of the patient, a relative or a care home or insurer, as you state when booking, with the trip and the date. Care homes and clinics that organise appointments for several residents can open a business account with a monthly invoice, as the clinics and hospitals page explains. Appointments, buildings and access to each hospital are published by Sacyl, and it is worth checking the clinic entrance the day before, because in the León complex the right building is not always the main one.
Frequently asked questions
How much is it from Astorga to León hospital and back, with waiting time?
The published "from" fare for the trip is 78,78 €, for 54 km and about 45 min. The waiting time and the return are added when booking and the calculator gives the fixed total before you confirm.
Is this medical transport?
No. It is a car with a driver to get to and from the appointment; it carries no stretcher and no healthcare staff. Non-urgent medical transport is prescribed by the doctor and assigned by Sacyl at no cost to the patient. If you need a wheelchair, an accessible vehicle is assigned at booking.
Does the driver wait if the appointment runs over?
Yes. The booking carries the expected waiting time and, if the appointment is delayed, the driver keeps waiting and the adjustment follows the policy published on the help page. Call or use the app when you come out and the car returns to the door.
Can I book for my mother, who lives in Villablino, from my phone?
Yes. You book in her name with her telephone and home address; you receive the pickup and arrival notices. From Villablino to El Bierzo Hospital it is 64 km; to León hospital, 96 km.
Is there a bus from the villages to León hospital?
The intercity bus arrives at León bus station, not at the hospital, and from there you carry on by city bus or taxi; the timetables are published by the regional government and León city council. There are few departures a day, on weekdays only, and they do not fit an early appointment.

How we write, where the figures come from and how we correct an error: editorial policy.
Each hospital's buildings, access and clinic hours belong to Sacyl and may change; check them on your appointment letter. Non-urgent medical transport is a public health service entitlement and this service does not replace it. Distances and times are those of the route engine in daytime with no incidents; the exact price comes from the calculator with date, time and waiting.
