San Andrés del Rabanedo, Bembibre and La Robla: getting from León's edge, the Bierzo Alto and the mountain gateway to León station, the hospitals and the airports

San Andrés del Rabanedo, La Robla and Bembibre depend on different places. San Andrés forms a single city with León: the station is a short ride, from 18,00 € per car, and La Virgen del Camino airport is right next door. La Robla, to the north up the Bernesga valley, goes down to the capital for the university hospital, 25 km away. Bembibre, in the Bierzo Alto, looks to Ponferrada: the Hospital El Bierzo is 25 km away, and for the fast train you have to climb the Manzanal to León, from 123,01 €. For most flights people end up at Barajas or Asturias. The price is fixed before you book and is per car, not per person.

What do San Andrés, La Robla and Bembibre share, and what separates them?

All three are towns in the province of León with their own shops, health centre and local life, but each lives in a different landscape. San Andrés del Rabanedo sits right against the capital on the west side and, for practical purposes, is one more district of the city, with Trobajo del Camino on the route of the French Way. La Robla is to the north, in the Bernesga valley, where the plain starts to close in towards the Cantabrian mountains and the road to Asturias. Bembibre lies to the west, on the far side of the Manzanal pass, in the Bierzo Alto, an area whose climate and customs are closer to Galicia. That geography decides where each resident goes for the doctor, the train or the plane, which is why this guide deals with each town separately.

What they share is León station as the gateway to high-speed rail, linking the province with Madrid via Palencia and Valladolid and with Asturias via the Pajares bypass, along with the shortage of public transport outside peak hours. The station stands beside the Bernesga river, a short walk from the centre, and is the whole province's link to fast trains, so early in the morning it gathers travellers who come from far away. For an early train or a late return, a car with a driver covers the journey the bus does not. And for flying, the three towns also share the same dilemma: a very close airport of their own but with few routes, another in Asturias on the far side of the mountains, and Barajas, with far more on offer, at the end of the A-6.

How do you travel from San Andrés del Rabanedo, right next to León?

From San Andrés everything is close: the university hospital, the station, the cathedral and the university are an urban ride away. The question is hardly ever how to get there, but whether it is worth parking in the centre or by the station early in the morning, when the drop-off area fills up. For the early train, the late return with suitcases or an appointment with someone who does not drive, a car with a driver saves hunting for a space. León airport is at La Virgen del Camino, very close by, and from San Andrés the transfer costs from 23,34 €. It has few routes, some only in season, so before booking it is worth checking with Aena that your flight leaves from there.

San Andrés also plays a part in the Camino de Santiago: the French Way leaves León through Trobajo del Camino towards La Virgen del Camino, and in season there are pilgrims who need to get back to the station, skip a stage because of an injury or reach the hostel with their pack. In those cases it helps to give the exact pickup point when booking and say how many packs are coming. The capital's festivities also weigh here: León's Holy Week, of international tourist interest, closes many streets in the old town, and the San Juan and San Pedro festivities, in late June, fill the nights with traffic between the city and the surrounding towns when there is no bus left. For those dates the practical thing is to book early and set the pickup away from the procession routes.

What are the options for La Robla, at the gateway to the mountains?

La Robla lies in the Bernesga valley, north of the capital, on the road and motorway to Asturias. It is a town with a railway tradition: its station opened with the León to La Robla section of the line towards Asturias, and it was the starting point of the narrow-gauge railway that carried coal from León's mining valleys to Bizkaia, a story told by the Railway Museum, housed in that line's former company store. Today it has regional trains on the conventional line, on timetables published by Renfe that do not always fit a high-speed train. León station is 29 km away, and a car with a driver is the direct way to connect with the first AVE trains of the morning or to get home at night.

For healthcare, La Robla's reference is the Complejo Asistencial Universitario de León, in the capital, and an appointment means heading down the valley early in the morning, when traffic is pouring into the city. From La Robla you can also reach one of the best-known visits in the León mountains: the Valporquero caves, at Vegacervera, which are toured with a guide and have their own season and hours. The access road is a mountain road, and a transfer from La Robla costs from 45,42 €. The practical thing is to fix the visit time first and then the pickup, with a margin for the return. In winter, snow and ice on the mountain passes can lengthen any journey northwards.

How do you get out of Bembibre, in the Bierzo Alto?

Bembibre is the main town of the Bierzo Alto, beside the A-6, between Ponferrada and the Manzanal pass. For healthcare it looks to Ponferrada: the Hospital El Bierzo serves the area and the surrounding valleys without the need to go to León, although for some specialities patients are referred to the capital, which means a long round trip in the day. A transfer from Bembibre to the university hospital in León means climbing the Manzanal towards Astorga, the tricky stretch in winter. For the train, Bembibre has a station on the conventional line crossing El Bierzo, with few services; for high-speed trains you have to go to León. From Bembibre you can also reach Las Médulas, south-west of Ponferrada, from 71,00 €.

Las Médulas, the old Roman gold mine declared a World Heritage Site, are explored on foot from the village and the viewpoints, and there is hardly any public transport, so a car is the practical way there and back; it is worth allowing extra time for the return, because walks usually run longer than planned. Bembibre celebrates the Santísimo Cristo festivities in mid-September, with the procession of the Santo Ecce Homo, according to the programme published by its town council, and in July Ponferrada's Templar Night fills the old town of El Bierzo's capital with events that finish late. In both cases the return to the villages is concentrated in the small hours, when there is no bus left, and it is worth booking the way back at the same time as the way out.

León airport, Asturias or Barajas: which suits each town?

León airport, at La Virgen del Camino, is the closest to all three, and for San Andrés it is practically next door. The problem is what it offers: few routes, some only in season. Asturias airport, near Avilés, has quite a few more routes and is an alternative for the capital, La Robla and the north of the province, as long as the passes are clear; La Robla sits right on the road that crosses the mountains. For Bembibre the sums change, because from El Bierzo people also compare the Galician airports. Barajas is far away, 387 km from Bembibre, but it concentrates the widest range of destinations and times, and for many intercontinental trips it is the only sensible option.

For Barajas, the route from León heads down the A-66 to Benavente and there takes the A-6, which crosses the Guadarrama through the AP-6 toll tunnel or over the Alto del León pass; for the airport you leave the motorway for the M-40 or M-50 before entering Madrid. From San Andrés the journey takes around 247 min in daytime, with a pickup at home and a drop at the terminal. For early flights no train reaches the airport in time, and the car avoids spending the night before in Madrid. On the way back the driver waits in arrivals with a name sign and follows the flight if it is delayed, which matters when the last train to León has already gone.

What should you bear in mind in winter, at festival time and with children or older people?

In winter the passes shape the journeys from all three towns. The Manzanal, between Bembibre and Astorga, can have snow or ice and is the stretch that lengthens the way to León and Madrid the most; Pajares and the rest of the mountains affect anyone leaving La Robla for Asturias; and the Guadarrama, at the end of the A-6, affects everyone heading for Barajas. For an early train or flight it is worth bringing the pickup forward and checking road conditions with the DGT. In early October the San Froilán festivities close León's festive calendar with many people from the province in the city. On the busiest days it is worth booking ahead and agreeing the exact pickup point away from the centre.

For families, the useful thing is to say when booking how many child seats are needed and how much luggage is coming, so the car is the right size and the calculator reflects it in the fixed price. For older people living in Bembibre or La Robla whose family is in another city, the transfer to an appointment can be booked in their name, with their phone number so the driver can let them know on arrival, and an adapted vehicle requested if they use a wheelchair. It is not medical transport and does not replace an ambulance: it is a car with a driver to get to and from the appointment. In every case the invoice includes VAT and is issued to whoever pays, and the waiting and cancellation conditions are on the help page.

Frequently asked questions

How much is La Robla to Barajas airport?

From 458,20 € per car and trip, VAT included. Give the flight number and terminal when booking, and the driver works out the pickup time with the margin the airline asks for.

I live in Bembibre and have an appointment at León hospital: how much is it?

From 129,11 € per car. You can book both ways with the estimated time you will finish; if it runs late, you let the driver know.

Are there flights from León airport to my destination?

La Virgen del Camino airport has few routes and some are seasonal. Check on the Aena website before booking the transfer; if there is no flight, compare Asturias and Barajas.

I am walking the Camino and want to skip a stage from San Andrés: how do I book?

Give the hostel or exact point on the Camino where the driver should collect you, the destination and how many packs you are carrying. The price is fixed before you confirm.

Is the price per person or per car?

Per car and trip. A family or small group shares a single amount; if a larger or adapted vehicle is needed, say so when booking and the calculator takes it into account.
